New links added

In the "Navigation" area to the right, there are two new links.

One is to the picture gallery - I will be adding WP2 pictures in the next day or two, as well as whatever else I feel like putting in there. Right now, there are some Dayton pics.

One is to Andrei's RTTY DXCC via LoTW page. This was posted to the CQ-RTTY reflector last month, and people are requesting some form of navigation off of the main page. If you are a RTTY operator and want to post how many DXCC confirmed countries you have (Logbook of the World (LoTW) only!), feel free to register and post your score.

More updates on the way...

WP2/K4FO QRX later on 80M

Well, I just gave 80CW a shot, but the band is ridiculously noisy right now from the Caribbean. 20M is dead, and Andrei KP2/NP3D is working RTTY on the 40 beam. I am the only one here that is working mostly CW, and then only for a while.

I will try 80M CW later, for those interested. If I am able to hop on 40M, the beam is headed for EU and I'll be running in the lower part of the band.
If anyone has Google Mail / Google Talk, you can add me to your gtalk contact list. My gtalk ID is "palmer.sample"

WP2 - Significant events thus far

OK, so here are some things we've managed to accomplish:

Day 1:

Miss connection from San Juan to St. Croix because my flight from Orlando had "low pressure indications we want to check out" and taxiied back to the gate. Stayed at gate for about 2 hours. Very happy in the fact that I purchased an upgrade to first class.

Arrive St. Croix. Late. Make our host (Brad) wait even longer for the next flight from San Juan.

In true form, decide that we should drive to a beach and get some food. This is an island paradise; there MUST be food by a beach.

Manage to get incredibly lost on an island that is only 82 square miles. Apparently roads just kind of turn 90 degrees, but that 90 degree turn takes you off of the "main road" that you were on.

After getting lost, find hole-in-wall place. Not even really any walls, just an open air joint with rising smoke. Order plate of BBQ pork and chicken, both of which are hot off the grill and are hacked into smaller pieces with a machete that I'm pretty sure wouldn't live up to the standards of "sanitary."

Revel in the fact that the ghetto BBQ is possibly the best BBQ pork I've had in my life.

Somehow make it back to the house. This was probably the most amazing thing that happened to us on the first day.

Welcome to St. Croix U.S.V.I. - 23 Sep - 01 Oct 2007

(Остров Святого Креста, Американские Виргинские острова
23-го Сентября - 1-го Октября, 2007)

In preparation for the CQWW RTTY Contest, we have arrived in KP2. We are staying at Radio Reef, on top of a hill overlooking the Caribbean toward the north.

3 operators are working:

Palmer, WP2/K4FO
Andrei, KP2/NP3D
Dima, NP2/AK2P
We are using a shack with 2 operating positions:

Position 1 - Yaesu FT-1000MP with Alpha 89 amplifier
Position 2 - Yaesu FT-920, also with an Alpha 89

Antennas are on two towers, with one beam for 17m - 10m, and another with a Force 12 magnum that has 6 elements on 20m and 3 elements on 40m.

So far, operating conditions have been excellent - Andrei and Dima have been working pileups on SSB and RTTY since we have arrived, and I intervene to run CW, usually in the evenings.

Pictures will be posted on this site as they become available.

QSL Information:
WP2/K4FO: 100% LoTW, paper qsl direct to K4FO (address on qrz.com)

KP2/NP3D: 100% LoTW

NP2/AK2P: ??

See you on the air!

Operating time was 47 minutes, I was QRT much of the contest due to thunderstorms. I don't understand how, during the week, it storms once a day now (*hooray*) for about an hour here. Then, for the past two contest weekends, it storms for what seems like ALL DAY!

I really enjoy these RTTY contests, but it's becoming more and more apparent that the MONSTER just "ain't cuttin' the mustard!"

Had a few good runs, bands of people would appear for a pile-up and then silence! Off and on, but that's ok. I'm sure that when DADDY MONSTER arrives, I will actually be able to get a respectable score!

10 meters was open before the contest - friend Andrei NP3D and I were checking bands around noon before the contest, he said the MONSTER was pounding New York on 28090. Of course, he probably had a bazillion-element beam pointed at my back yard, but that's OK.

It was good to work this one for a bit of practice before going to Honduras in September for the CQ WW RTTY contest - now I'm ready to go! Hi hi

A good time as always...

Testing, 1, 2, 3...

Just testing the look and feel of this CMS...

I really hate to use the term 'blog' to describe this portion of the site, but I guess that's technically what it is. I tend to think of a 'blog' more as an online diary, something that is _supposed_ to be updated on a regular basis - but that's not what I'll be doing.

Nope, I like the concept of "content management system" - since potential posts will be informative, opinionated, or both. Don't expect this to be my online diary - just a place to share knowledge.

In other words, don't expect daily updates... and until I can figure out what system would best suit my needs, don't even get too attached to this portion of the site. I've tried wikis, FAQs, text - lots of stuff. I'm just wanting something that's easy to maintain, easy to edit, and easy to administer. Heck, I've written my own CMS tools, but I just don't have the time or inclination to do software development on a website anymore (unless I'm getting paid, and then I would rather outsource the work!)

73 and let's see how this works out...
